It's Worse Than We Thought

The threat from HR 5 goes much deeper than previously exposed. In a thorough analysis of the bill today, I made a shocking discovery. It goes far beyond preventing any religious exemption to gender identity and orientation claims. It will completely erase ALL religious exemptions to ANY non-discrimination claim, not just LGBT!

Below, I’ll show you the consequences of this. But first, I’m urgently asking you to sign our petition against this bill. It was chilling to listen to government leaders discuss this so-called “Equally Act.” The chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), claimed that the current balance between religious freedom and non-discrimination will be maintained. He gave the example that Jewish rabbis could keep their male-only requirements. But this is a bald-faced lie about the true impact of this bill.

Our legal team looked at HR 5. It inserts the clause (banning religious exemptions) in a way that reflects back onto all of the protected groups in the current non-discrimination statement, which includes religion. The result is that churches and religious organizations will be forced to hire people opposed to their faith.

  • Colleges could not require students or teachers adhere to their statement of faith.
  • Churches could be forced to take atheists on their missions trips.
  • Women could demand to be rabbis, imams, and pastors of conservative church denominations.
  • Overnight trips could not be segregated into rooms by biological gender.
  • Gender-specific meetings within churches or club membership would become open to anyone.
  • Cross-dressers could demand that they be greeters, ushers, Sunday School teachers


HR 5’s sponsor, Rep. David Cicilline (D-NJ) made a contradictory statement saying HR 5 “does not eliminate RFRA” (which is our current law protecting religious freedom) But that is not true. Cicilline immediately admitted, “It simply says you may not use RFRA.” However, making a law unusable does destroy and eliminate that law’s power.

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) gave an emotional defense, saying this ban of religious exemptions “will be used as a sword to strike down our religious freedoms, because the words here have meaning...these words will be given the meaning they actually have and it will destroy...the First Amendment.”

Will you stand by and do nothing while members of Congress are saying HR 5 will destroy our religious freedom? I will not. Liberty Counsel Action is preparing to hand-deliver the names of everyone who signs out petition to key congressional leaders to stop HR 5 in its tracks.
