How Much Did They Give for Freedom...

Jul 5, 2019

At the Independence Day celebration, President Trump stood on the National Mall in Washington D.C. and addressed our nation, saying:

"Together, we are part of one of the greatest stories ever told. The story of America. It is the epic tale of a nation whose people have risked everything for what they know is right and what they know is true. It is the chronicles of brave citizens who never give up their dream of a better and brighter future."

To look at the beginning of this story, we see the very first sacrifices given to create our nation. Our Founding Fathers were under physical attack. Yet to preserve our nation, today, you and I are under a different type of attack. But one that is just as dangerous to our future freedoms. LCA is being attacked by legislators, the mainstream media, Hollywood, and radical lobbyists.

Yet we are resolved that we will not abandon this brave vision for a better future of America as a land of where life is protected, liberty is respected and where happiness is not guaranteed but the freedom to pursue it is. LCA is working hard to protect and preserve the rights our nation was founded on. If you could join us with a donation to help us fight this battle, I would be so grateful.

President Trump is right. Even going back to the beginning of our nation's story there is a rich history of sacrifice. You may know that Benjamin Franklin gave Congress his entire fortune before sailing to France to gain their support. But many don't know the sacrifice of others who gave nearly everything they had.

  • Robert Morris was the superintendent of finances and regularly paid for militia supplies out of his own pocket. He personally bought the supplies needed to win an American victory at Yorktown. He purchased a thousand barrels of flour to feed soldiers the winter of 1778. He spent more than 1 million dollars personally (if adjusted for inflation that is nearly 30 million dollars).
  • George Clymer converted his entire fortune into continental currency, even though he knew it would likely be rendered worthless. Then his home was destroyed when American loyalists pointed it out to British troops.
  • George Walton signed the declaration then served as a colonel. In Savannah, a cannonball broke his leg and he was captured for nine months. His wife was also imprisoned in the West Indies while the British ransacked their home.
  • Carter Braxton permanently "loaned" the Continental Congress 10,000 pounds of sterling. Then he remodeled ships to carry more cargo. Many were captured by the British. By the end of the war, he was completely bankrupt.
  • Joseph Hewes renounced his Quaker faith so he could fight in the Revolution. In spite of his business being trade, he was a vocal supporter of cutting off trade with Britain. This destroyed his personal income.
  • Thomas McKean became the President of Delaware. He had to move his family five times to avoid capture.
  • John Hart had a 400-acre farm that was plundered by mercenaries. His wife died while he was fleeing the British and his kids were cared for by neighbors.
  • Francis Lewis saw the British destroy his Long Island estate and then put his wife in prison. She was tortured on a regular basis hoping that would make him recant his signature. Two years later, she was finally released in a prisoner exchange.

It has been 243 years since their investment into our nation and we are still experiencing daily the freedom and blessing from their support and commitment.

+++ The next 243 years

These incredible patriots have made a huge difference to every American today. But I want to challenge you to help shape the future of America. What are we leaving to future generations? What investments are we making to shape the future?

I encourage you to seek to answers to these questions with prayer. And I invite you to consider partnering with Liberty Counsel Action.

We are moving to a new location just across from the U.S. Supreme Court building. This is an incredible opportunity to expand our ministry’s impact on Capitol Hill. Because of this move, we are able to help host a delegation from Nigeria. Together, we are shining light on horrific religious persecution faced by Christians in that part of the world.

Looking at God’s hand leading us to this point, I am confident that this is just the beginning of the expansion of LCA's ministry in D.C. It would be an incredible encouragement if you would partner with us. Click the button below to donate to help cover these costs.

May I echo the words of President Trump yesterday and many others before him...

"Let freedom ring!"

Sincerely,

Mat Staver
Chairman, Liberty Counsel Action

P.S. This moment is an incredible opportunity to invest in the future of our organization by supporting our new building location. We are committed to making a difference in D.C. If you are able to donate, please do to enable us to continue fighting these battles on Capitol Hill and around the world. Help us spread the word.
