Press Release: Ohio Voters Should Oppose Issue 1 Abortion Amendment

Oct 10, 2023

COLUMBUS, OH — Today is the deadline for voter registration for Ohioans who wish to participate in the vote to defeat a referendum that forces abortion on demand. Liberty Counsel Action encourages Ohioans to vote NO on Issue 1, the so-called “Right to Make Reproductive Decisions Including Abortion Initiative,” which would enshrine abortion in the state constitution, widely expand abortion access in Ohio, and endanger unborn babies’ lives with virtually no pro-life protections.

The amendment will appear on the November 7, 2023, ballot as Ohio Issue 1. The deadline for voter registration is Tuesday, October 10. Early voting begins Wednesday, October 11.

“Abortion has claimed the lives of over 63 million unborn children in the United States.  Ohio’s Issue 1 would endanger the lives of innocent children by allowing abortion through all nine months of pregnancy up to the point where the baby is born alive. Issue 1 will also be used to force Ohioans to pay for abortion through their tax dollars. Ohioans should vote NO on Issue 1.  Don’t let Ohio become a haven for human carnage. Abortion kills children and hurts women,” said Mat Staver, Chairman of Liberty Counsel Action.

This proposed amendment would alter Ohio’s Constitution to enshrine a constitutional “right” for Ohioans to “make and carry out one’s own reproductive decisions,” which includes abortion, contraception, and fertility treatment. This proposal would essentially allow unlimited abortion access and override all Ohio abortion laws, including Ohio’s six-week heartbeat-based abortion ban. It would also remove protection against partial-birth and dismemberment abortions, end parental consent requirements, and allow disabled babies to be targeted for death. The amendment was drafted by the Ohio chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and is supported by the Ohio Physicians for Reproductive Rights (OPRR).

“Issue 1 is a deceptively written radical ballot initiative that if passed, will change Ohio’s Constitution to allow late term abortions, and minors to receive transgender treatments without any parental input,” said former Speaker Pro Tempore in the Ohio House of Representatives and pastor, Tim Ginter.

Over 100 Black faith leaders from Ohio also encouraged Ohioans to vote no on Issue 1 in a letter that detailed the “moral issue” of the “life-or-death” matter of abortion and how it disproportionately kills Black babies.

“[Issue 1] is more extreme than Roe v. Wade, and it will allow for painful, late-term abortions through all nine months of pregnancy – even after an unborn baby can feel pain. It will permit our children to undergo abortions without parents knowing. And it will continue to rob generations of Black women and men of the insurmountable joy of parenthood,” the bipartisan group of Black faith leaders wrote in an open letter.
