Amber Thurman was just 28 years old when she was killed by complications after ingesting the abortion pill. She already had a young son. Then she found out she was carrying twins. She didn’t want children to get in the way of her potential nursing career, but both of her babies had heartbeats so Georgia state law prohibited her from killing them. Thurman sought an out-of-state abortion in North Carolina to kill both babies surgically when they were nine weeks old. But nothing went as “planned.”

After ingesting the abortion pill and having an “incomplete abortion,” Thurman developed extreme sepsis from what appeared to be the remains of a child left in her uterus. Despite antibiotics and a hysterectomy, Thurman was unable to survive and passed away during surgery.

She is not alone. About 6% of woman suffer complications from the abortion pill that are serious enough to land them in an emergency room! That’s more than one in 20 women who experience side effects like hemorrhaging, surgical intervention, and — as in Thurman’s case — death.

These pills are four times MORE dangerous than first-trimester surgical abortions. Yet many people don’t realize how much abortion kills both mothers and their children.

HR 12, an active bill in Congress, will force even the most pro-life states to allow not just the abortion pill but abortion procedures all nine months. This bill might as well be named the “Planned Parenthood Protection Act,” and we need YOUR help to defeat it. The vote margins in Congress are incredibly thin right now.

Thurman was on her way to the abortion clinic in North Carolina when she was delayed by traffic and missed her appointment time, so the staff improvised and gave her an abortion pill to end the life of her twins. Then she insisted on taking the four-hour drive home.

Time after time, women like Thurman are completely unprepared for what this pill does to them. About four days after she took it:

Thurman vomited blood and passed out at home, according to 911 call logs. Her boyfriend called for an ambulance. Thurman arrived at Piedmont Henry Hospital in Stockbridge at 6:51 p.m. ... Her lower abdomen was tender, according to the summary. Her white blood cell count was critically high and her blood pressure perilously low — at one point, as Thurman got up to go to the bathroom, she fainted again and hit her head. Doctors noted a foul odor during a pelvic exam, and an ultrasound showed possible tissue in her uterus.

They tried antibiotics, IVs, and surgery, but in the end, couldn’t save her life. In a weird twist of words, abortionists are trying to claim that a second surgical abortion may have prevented her death, so they attempt to claim that the pro-life law caused her death. This is how far they are willing to go to twist the truth. The reality is that had she had not taken the abortion pill Thurman would still be alive today.

These are the lies we are trying to fight across the nation.

We cannot sit back and think we are going to win this issue. Judges in North and South Dakota and Missouri all ruled against the pro-life position.

In South Dakota, judges delayed hearing a lawsuit against the illegal signature collection methods until AFTER the vote in November. This nonsensical delay undermines justice.

In North Dakota, the previous week a judge overturned a pro-life law that only allowed abortion in cases of rape and incest up to six weeks. The state is technically still abortion-free because the only clinic in the state moved five minutes up the road to Minnesota. The attorney general plans to appeal.

An extremely radical ballot initiative in Missouri provides a loophole for abortion up to the moment of birth for the “mental health” of the mother. This means that for any emotional reason, a mother can kill her fully viable child. It prevents prosecution for a “pregnancy outcome,” and it’s even more disturbing that it adds “postpartum care” as part of this initiative. This combination of language will allow abortionists to argue that infanticide could be legalized.

These states — and others with the ballot initiatives — are deeply concerning. We are actively involved to create a firewall for life.
