MAHA Commission Raises Concern on Pharmaceutical Contaminants in the Water Supply

Sep 11, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Following a June 2025 special report from Liberty Counsel Action that urged national attention to abortion contaminants in America’s water supply, a landmark strategy report from the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) Commission released September 9, 2025, recommended looking deeper into how pharmaceuticals are affecting water quality.

The strategy report, “Make Our Children Healthy Again,” was commissioned by President Donald Trump through executive order last February and builds on a May 22 assessment regarding the factors of chronic illness among children. The strategy directs U.S. agencies to advance “rigorous, gold standard” research that promotes informed decision making, healthy family outcomes, and innovative solutions.

A critical research area listed in the strategy included water quality. The MAHA commission directs the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to specifically assess water contaminants.  In addition to researching ways to improve water quality, the strategy recommends that agencies include “research to inform the understanding of levels of pharmaceuticals in our water supply that could be adversely affecting animal and human health.”

Specifically, the MAHA Commission identifies “chemical exposure” as one of the potential drivers behind the rise of chronic childhood disease.

“Children are exposed to an increasing number of synthetic chemicals, some of which have been linked to developmental issues and chronic disease,” the report reads. “The current regulatory framework should be continually evaluated to ensure that chemicals and other exposures do not interact together to pose a threat to the health of our children.”

According to Liberty Counsel Action’s special report, entitled “Abortion in Our Water, A Special Report: Chemical Home Abortions & the Disposition of Aborted Fetal Remains,” an estimated 700,000 chemical abortions occur per year—many at home—and about 30-40 tons of hazardous medical waste, including human remains, are being flushed into the water systems.  The report draws its findings from various studies, peer-reviewed research, petitions to the EPA, government documents, interviews with water treatment experts, and proprietary modeling. The report provides further comprehensive analysis regarding the environmental impact of the abortion pill (Mifepristone) and human fetal remains entering our water systems, including these findings:

  • The likely introduction of the chemical byproducts of Mifepristone, which act as endocrine disruptors and are not removed by conventional wastewater treatment, into our drinking water supplies.
  • The presence of human fetal tissue biomarkers in drinking water sources.
  • A significant gap in federal environmental regulations concerning medical waste disposal from at-home abortions.
  • The complete absence of environmental impact studies before the drug Mifepristone was approved by the FDA.

Liberty Counsel Action Public Policy Analyst Abigail Forman, primary author of the white paper, said, “The Make America Healthy Again Commission recognizing that America’s water supply contains pharmaceutical contaminants is a huge step toward addressing this national problem. The approximately 700,000 at-home chemical abortions annually in the nation is resulting in the flushing of human fetal tissues and active abortion pill contaminants into our water. Indeed, water Americans use for everyday life—to drink, cook, and bathe in—more than likely contains active components from the lethal abortion drug Mifepristone, which wastewater treatment plants are not designed to filter out. In the wake of this new MAHA strategy and the FDA's current safety review of Mifepristone, now presents an opportune time for the FDA to conduct a new, legally compliant and comprehensive environmental assessment on water contamination caused by at-home chemical abortions.”
