The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE Act) would require proof of citizenship to register to vote, require photo ID to vote, and limit absentee ballots to cases of military service, disability, illness, or travel. These are not radical demands. They are basic guardrails for a constitutional republic. But if the Senate refuses to bring the SAVE Act to the floor now, the window for an orderly, fair transition before the midterms may slam shut. The bill has already passed the House and is sitting at the door of the Seante.

This is not a partisan fringe issue — and the numbers prove it.

A recent CNN survey shows that 95% of Republicans support mandatory photo ID for voting. More importantly, about three out of four Democrats support it too. This is one of the rare issues where the American people are already unified — and the political class is the obstacle.

Support has only grown stronger over time. In 2018, national support for photo ID laws hovered around 76%. By 2025, support climbed to 83% of Americans. When broken down by race, the data tells the same story: 85% of White voters, 82% of Latino voters, and 76% of Black voters support showing photo ID to vote.

And let’s be honest about life. You need a photo ID for work, to access a library computer, to turn on utilities, to book a hotel, or to buy cold medicine. To enter government buildings, you must present a photo ID. No one calls those requirements “racist.” No one protests the DMV because this identification requirement exists. Yet when it comes to voting — the most solemn civic duty in our republic — confirming who you are is suddenly treated as an act of oppression.

That is why it was stunning when Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) waded into this controversy with both barrels blazing and claimed: “The SAVE Act is nothing more than Jim Crow 2.0. It would disenfranchise millions of Americans. Every single Senate Democrat will vote against any bill that contains it.” Nonsense!

It is a mockery to hear Schumer conflate the SAVE Act with “Jim Crow 2.0.” Jim Crow laws made it illegal for Blacks to vote, whereas the SAVE Act throws open the door to every American citizen to vote regardless of their race. In addition, it protects each person’s vote by ensuring ONLY citizens vote.

Delaying this bill will mean that illegals will be casting votes in the November midterms. That is unacceptable.
