Water Plants Targeted by Iran and China

Sep 10, 2026

At the end of July, hackers targeted operational technology at “more than 30 community water systems” across Minnesota. Officials called it a “coordinated cyberattack.” We have known about China. Now Iran is also involved.

These hacks can shut down the water supply. Even worse, they can poison the water supply.

America’s infrastructure, including power and water, have become targets of hostile adversaries.

Multiple bills in Congress seek to address this threat before it happens again. This shouldn’t be a partisan issue.

Urge Congress to take action NOW with your faxes.

Federal investigators are warning Americans that our water systems are increasingly exposed to cyberattacks capable of reaching the equipment that controls pumps, valves, and other physical infrastructure.

At least seven states reported attacks targeting water and wastewater industrial controllers. The FBI admitted some of those attacks degraded water operations.

And then a serious attack struck Minnesota — one that authorities believe could be linked to Iran.

That’s not the only nation. China has already been caught positioning hackers inside American infrastructure.

The FBI says the Chinese government-sponsored hacking group known as Volt Typhoon has penetrated critical U.S. telecommunications, energy, transportation and water infrastructure.

Federal authorities concluded China was not simply collecting intelligence.

They assessed that Chinese hackers were pre-positioning themselves for the possibility of disruptive or destructive attacks during a future crisis or conflict.

Water is not simply a convenience. Besides air, it is arguably the most immediate physical necessity of human life.

If a foreign enemy could take away our water in communities across the nation — all with the click of a button — the results would be devastating.

Send your urgent faxes to Congress. We have several critical bills in Congress now to fight this threat. But Congress needs to act swiftly and pass these bills that offer critical protections from this threat.

  • H.R. 2659, the Strengthening Cyber Resilience Against State-Sponsored Threats Act.
  • H.R. 7208, the PROTECT the Grid Act.
  • S. 1778, the Countering Chinese Espionage Reporting Act.

America’s vulnerability is serious. We have nearly 170,000 drinking-water and wastewater systems. Many are small and have aging technology. Very few have dedicated cybersecurity.

The battlefield now runs through the internet and reaches your kitchen faucet. A determined enemy with a computer and access to vulnerable infrastructure could potentially cause enormous disruption and even death from halfway around the world.

If we don’t fix this now, our enemies wouldn’t need an invading army, missiles, or a nuclear weapon to collapse our nation.

Liberty Counsel Action is working to expose threats to America's security, sovereignty, and freedom before disaster forces Washington to pay attention.

Will you partner with us today with a monthly gift of 25, 50, or even 100 dollars to help us continue sounding the alarm and mobilizing Americans?

If a monthly commitment isn't possible, please make the most generous one-time gift you can today.

America's critical infrastructure must be protected before the next cyberattack becomes something much worse than a headline.

Thank you very much,
