Advancing Life and Liberty Through Action

The Case for Life

The Founders acknowledged in the Declaration of Independence certain unalienable rights endowed by our Creator — life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These rights apply to both born and unborn because life begins at conception, which is not only established by the Bible, natural law, and morality but is also affirmed by biological research.

Life begins at fertilization. At that moment, a new human being with unique DNA is created. As Christians who understand all human life is sacred and created in the image of God, the abortion debate is a matter of life and death. In a culture that champions so-called “women’s rights” (except for females in the womb) and claims “my body, my choice” (even though a preborn baby is a distinct person), the church must lead with absolute truth and clarity when it comes to the gruesome reality of abortion.

The Bible is explicit in affirming the humanity of the preborn, each of whom is created imago Dei, in God’s image. In fact, God used a preborn baby to be the first person to recognize the Messiah when John the Baptist leapt in Elizabeth’s womb upon hearing Mary, who was pregnant with Jesus (Luke 1).

Throughout Scripture, the humanity of life in the womb is affirmed, such as in Psalm 139:13-14a, 15-16: “For You formed my inward parts; You knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. ... My frame was not hidden from You, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in Your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.”

Maureen Condic, Ph.D., wrote, “The conclusion that human life begins at sperm-egg fusion is uncontested, objective, based on the universally accepted scientific method of distinguishing different cell types from each other and on ample scientific evidence. ... Moreover, it is entirely independent of any specific ethical, moral, political, or religious view of human life or of human embryos.”

A human’s location or stage of development does not determine his or her rights or humanity. From the moment of conception until 39 weeks gestation, a preborn baby is equally deserving of rights as an adult. The American College of Pediatricians asserts that the difference between a human in its “zygotic stage” at conception and as an adult is simply “one of form, not nature.”
From conception, a human being is created and begins rapid development that will continue until he or she is delivered. Live Action’s Baby Olivia “Window to the Womb” resource offers a realistic look into prenatal development:
  • By three weeks past fertilization, the baby’s heart is beating, and cells for nerves, blood, and kidney have appeared.

  • At four weeks, the left and right hemispheres of the brain are taking shape, and buds for arms and legs are forming.

  • In weeks five and six, the baby’s brain activity can be recorded, and bones begin to develop.

  • At weeks seven and eight, the baby has had over 1 million heartbeats.

  • At weeks nine and ten, the baby can suck his or her thumb, swallow, sigh, and stretch out in the womb.

  • At 11-14 weeks, the baby can make complex facial expressions and tastebuds are maturing.

  • At about 19 weeks in the womb, a baby’s heart has beaten over 20 million times.

  • At about 27 weeks, a baby recognizes his or her parents’ voices, responds to light, and has a sense of smell.

  • At 38 weeks, the baby shows breathing movements and will weigh about 6-8 pounds at birth.

Whether at 6 weeks gestation or full term, a preborn baby deserves human rights, the first of which is the right to life. We are working to make abortion in America both illegal and unthinkable, but sadly, abortion rates in America have risen since the fall of Roe v. Wade with at least 1,038,100 babies killed through abortion in 2024. Chemical abortions are now responsible for an estimated 63% of abortions, but this statistic is likely much higher due to black-market abortion pills.

Since the fall of Roe, the pro-life movement has been fighting to make abortion illegal and unthinkable through a multipronged strategy that includes efforts such as defunding Planned Parenthood and mobilizing to defeat the effort to enshrine abortion in state constitutions though abortion amendments.

The radical abortion-until-birth viewpoint represents much of the Democrat Party that is in lockstep in their support of baby murder at all points of pregnancy. In 2021, 218 Democrats (with one not voting and one voting no) voted for the so-called “Women’s Health Protection Act,” which should have been called the “Abortion On Demand Until Birth Act” because it would have removed nearly all protections for the preborn and abolished laws preventing late-term abortions.

Abortion is the violent murder of a preborn child in his or her mother’s womb. It is a gruesome chemical or surgical procedure that requires a preborn baby — who can feel pain early in development — to be poisoned, starved, suctioned, or dismembered to death. It is not health care because a “successful” procedure requires the killing of a human being.
From the moment of conception, a preborn human is worthy of rights. No woman has the “right” to kill her preborn baby.

Ultimately, abortion is a biblical, moral, and spiritual issue, and Christians must be bold in fighting this barbaric practice to end the genocide of the preborn.

As believers who value all preborn human life at all stages of development, we are working to combat this pro-death agenda and promote a culture of life where the preborn are afforded equal protection and human rights. We must be bold in protecting the right to life for the most vulnerable and defenseless people group, the preborn.
